Bayberry Taper Candles

$23.00

Bayberry candles have deep roots in early American history, cherished by settlers for burning brighter and cleaner than common tallow candles. Because harvesting the wax required boiling large quantities of berries, bayberry candles were considered special and saved for meaningful occasions. Over time, they became tied to holiday tradition and the belief that burning a bayberry candle on Christmas or New Year’s would bring luck and prosperity. Each set includes a printed copy of the historic Bayberry Legend to carry on this tradition. These candles continue to symbolize warmth, blessing, and the simple magic of old American customs.

Description

Artisan crafted from start to finish with care, these 10-inch bayberry taper candles are a traditional blend of pure bayberry wax mixed with beeswax, creating the ideal balance for a clean, slow, and beautifully steady burn. Each candle is poured with a 100% cotton wick to ensure a natural, smoke-free flame and the subtle, rich aroma bayberry is known for. Every set comes with a printed copy of the classic Bayberry Legend—long cherished as a symbol of luck, prosperity, and blessings for the year ahead. Perfect for holiday gatherings, meaningful rituals, or adding timeless charm to any home décor, these candles bring warmth, intention, and tradition to any space. Made with REAL bayberry wax, unlike most candles found on the market today which are made from parafin wax and synthetic fragrance. Combined with pure beeswax for a firmer hold and to prevent brittleness. Bayberry candles typically have a soft, natural olive-green or muted sage color, created by the wax itself rather than added dyes. They often have a smooth, rustic appearance that reflects traditional hand-poured craftsmanship. The scent is one of the reasons bayberry candles became so beloved. They carry a natural aroma that is earthy, woodsy, and slightly herbal with a hint of sweetness—often described as clean, crisp, and comforting without being overpowering. When burning, the scent deepens subtly, filling a room with a warm, nostalgic fragrance reminiscent of winter greenery and old-fashioned holiday traditions.

Bayberry wax has a long and meaningful place in early American history and folk tradition. In the 17th and 18th centuries, European settlers in New England found that unlike tallow candles—which smoked, smelled unpleasant, and burned quickly—candles made from the wax of the native bayberry shrub burned cleaner, brighter, and carried a naturally pleasant, woodsy fragrance. However, extracting the wax was extremely labor-intensive: it could take 15 pounds of berries to make a single pound of wax. Because of this, bayberry candles became a luxury item, reserved for holidays and special occasions rather than everyday lighting.

Over time, bayberry candles became rooted in American folklore and superstition. The most famous tradition is the Bayberry Legend, which says:

“A bayberry candle burned to the socket brings food to the larder and gold to the pocket.”

Families would burn bayberry candles on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve to invite good fortune, abundance, and blessings for the year to come. The candles became symbols of warmth, prosperity, and heartfelt good wishes. Even today, bayberry candles maintain their place as a nostalgic piece of Americana—handcrafted, natural, and tied to rituals of hope, community, and the simple comforts of early American life.

Whether used as decor or for lighting special moments, it’s a beautiful way to enjoy the purity of beeswax. This eco-friendly candle burns cleanly and slowly, free from toxins and synthetic fragrances and dyes. Small imperfections and slight color variations may be present, however we embrace these as unique characteristics of each piece. Store candles in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
